Understanding the Styles: Latin
Technique by Ryan Carver // February 02 2011
Now we venture into the realm of Latin. This style can be very fun to play on drums and also very overwhelming. Playing Latin drum set grooves are tough because they were created using various percussion instruments—not on the drum set. Playing Latin on drum set often has been thought of as being very complicated. Here I try to give you some basic examples that can be used in many different ways on the drum set. Playing percussion can also help you understand these grooves better. The Songo is my favorite to play because it was created on the drum set and is a lot of fun to groove on. Listen to some Latin music to get a better idea of the feel.
