Drummers Of The Pacific Northwest: Simona Bressi

In an ideal world we all would want just to play but understanding the business makes a difference! When I lived in LA I took music business classes, being informed about the music industry is very important.

Donn Garrett's Drummers of the Pacific Northwest features Seattle, WA based drummer Simona Bressi.

Donn Garett: How long have you been playing drums?

Simona Bressi: 25 years

DG: Are you self taught?

SB: No I started taking lessons right away; first back home in Italy then England, finally attended Musicians Institute PIT in 1996.

DG: How do you strike a balance between business and music?

SB: In an ideal world we all would want just to play but understanding the business makes a difference! When I lived in LA I took music business classes, being informed about the music industry is very important.

DG: What made you decide to play drums?

SB: I actually started playing guitar, I played in this cover band and one day our drummer didn't show up so I sat on the kit just to mess with it and really enjoyed it.

DG: Do you sing or play other instruments?

SB: You don't want me to sing! I used to own a bass but can't really say I can play it.

DG: What was your first kit; do you still have it or pieces of it?

SB: It was a 5 piece Rogers kit, sold it to move to London a long time ago!

DG: Who did you most want to be like?

SB: A cross between Vinnie Colaiuta, John Bonham, Stewart Copeland, Mitch Mitchell and Steve Jordan. Totally reasonable and realistic!

DG: Name the venue that you dream of playing at or you've already played there:

SB: Wembley Stadium and no I haven't played there!

DG: Who would you love to jam with?

SB: Jimi Hendrix if he was still alive, the remaining members of Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, NIN, Pino Palladino , Sting, David Bowie and Massive Attack.

DG: What kind of set do you play now and why?

SB: I play a DW Collector's series, 24", 13",16" and 18", alternate snares but my favorites are the Ludwig Black Beauty and Pearl Dennis Chambers, for cymbals I have Zildjian, Ufip and Istanbul.
