Interview by Donn Garrett // February 01 2015
Saul Ashley

My dad bought me Kiss Alive II, I opened up the album saw sparks shooting out of the drum set (which was 50 ft in the air) and listened to 100,000 years drum solo. That's all it took, been playing ever since.

The Black Page drum magazine's Donn Garrett features Seattle drummer Saul Ashley in this installment of Drummers of the Pacific Northwest.

Donn Garrett: How long have you been playing drums?

Saul Ashley: I have been playing drums since I was 9.

DG: Are you self taught?

SA: I took lessons from Garey Williams for about 2 years when I was around 19 plus played in my junior high 7th grade school band.

DG: How do you strike a balance between business and music?

SA: I almost can't stand the business of music because there is always someone in it for the wrong reasons. Name droppers to try and be popular, people trying to make money off other peoples talents and hard work etc. So to answer the question I try and find someone I trust that would be willing to represent me to deal with most of the business side of things.

DG: What made you decide to play drums (if a particular artist, which one)?

SA: That's an easy one. My dad bought me Kiss Alive II, I opened up the album saw sparks shooting out of the drum set (which was 50 ft in the air) and listened to 100,000 years drum solo. That's all it took, been playing ever since. Peter Criss was my earliest influence followed by Keith Moon, Billy Cobham, John Bonham, Neil Peart, Alex Van Halen.

DG: Do you sing or play other instruments?

SA: Yes I sing and play guitar, bass and a little bit of piano/keys.

DG: What was your first kit, do you still have it or pieces of it?

SA: My first kit was a 5 piece Maxwin unfortunately it burnt down in a fire in friends house.

DG: Who did you most want to be like?

SA: Peter Criss or Alex Van Halen because it looked like they had the most fun.

DG: Name the venue that you dream of playing at or you've already played there.

SA: Wakken festival- Germany.

DG: Who would you love to jam with?

SA: Tough question there are so many. Rush, Ann & Nancy Wilson, Eddie Van Halen, Kiss.

DG: What kind of set do you play now and why?

SA: I play on a custom DW kit. I just fell in love with it as I was searching for drum kits to purchase this one just caught my eye. the color deep red burgundy with gold hardware just like the one Neil Peart played a few years back.
