Ruling Your Drum World
Technique by Adam Hay // December 11 2012
Things are adequately explained in this video, I'd say, but the short of it is I had rediscovered what was a huge hit in the 1980s by Tears for Fears called "Everybody Wants to Rule the World." I explain the main drum part, then introduce some Afro-Cuban embellishments. This is a great example of building on something, the rewards of being creative, expressing your own voice. It all comes down to decisions we make in the moment and it's super fun! Otherwise we're just repeating the things (the musical choices in their moment) that other musicians have played. You should always add things, or subtract. Just be sure to make the drumming your own. Drumming is way more rewarding, gratifying and personal this way.
